She reshaped the science fiction genre by offering grounded, naturalistic stories in which characters like herself—Black characters—flourished.

Her body of work inspires us to imagine and dream beyond what is right in front of us.

There is magic in Butler’s thoughts and words. Butler is otherworldly.

In addition to “Mother of Afrofuturism,” people have described Butler as a prophet (um, Parable of the Sower?! 👀), a genius, and a New World Builder.

How did Butler do this?
